He wears only boxers or nothing, basically for the same reason you have given - comfort. He finds boxers comfortable under either long or short pants, make sure you buy the correct size for you; they are meant to be fairly loose.
Medically speaking boxers are better too, they allow the air to circulate keeping your testes cool...very important to maintain healthy sperm poduction. Not to mention it also elimates other pesky problems such as jock itch etc
